Tips and Tricks

We have listed a few training tips to help you:

  • Practice makes perfect – there are no short cuts to training.
  • Dogs learn from experience – good or bad!
  •  Dogs should not be allowed off lead until the recall is 100%
  • Set the house rules on day one and stick to them.
  • Training should not take place at certain times of the day – it should be practiced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Punishment does not work.
  • Rewards and positive experiences help a dog to develop.
  • Be patient with your dog and keep training sessions short.
  • It can take several weeks (sometimes months) to house train a puppy. Consistency and patience is the key.
  • Ignore bad behaviour and reward good behaviour.
  • Have a selection of treats in your training bag or pocket – this will make training more exciting and rewarding for your dog.
  • Have a couple of treat pots in different places around your home so that you can practice the recalls. Take a treat from the pot, call your dog and reward!
  • Different treats have different values – biscuits are low, treats from the pet shop (like Schmackos) are medium and chicken/liver/sausage are high. Have a selection of each but keep the high value for the difficult commands.
  • If your puppy hasn’t received his vaccinations you can still take him out of the house – carry him! Your puppy needs to be introduced to the outside world at an early age to learn how to cope with his environment.
  • Start your training the minute you get him home. This includes house training, not jumping up, and how to play without teeth!
  • Introduce the collar and lead in your home and garden NOT when you go out for the first walk. Also practice walking with the lead at home.
  • Only use your puppy’s name once to get his attention then reward him for looking at you or coming to you. If you constantly repeat his name for no reward he will soon learn to ignore you.
