Your Responsibilities – The Law

As a dog owner do you know all your responsibilities? We have listed some information on a few things we feel you should know.

Animal Welfare Act

This is a very important law that came into force on 6th April 2007 in England. The Animal Welfare Act enforces pet owners to care for their pets properly. This means that pet owners must provide a suitable environment to live, allow their animals to express natural behaviours, provide a suitable diet and allow access to fresh water, protect their pets from pain, injury, suffering and disease, and to house their animal with or apart from other animals.

Clean Neighborhood and Environment Act 2005

Dog owners have a duty to clean up after their dogs when they foul. It is also their responsibility to dispose of it in an appropriate way. Failure to do this can result in a fixed penalty of £80 or a fine of up to £1000.

Identification

All dogs must wear a collar and tag at all times. The tag must display the name and address of the owner. Failure to ensure your dog is wearing a collar and tag can result in a fine of up to £5000. If you loose your dog you should contact the dog warden at your local council. The Environment Protection Act 1990 allows your dog to be seized by the council who can then rehome or destroy the dog if it in unclaimed after 7 days.

Microchipping is a very useful method of identification. However, it is a recommendation and not law. The law states that every dog must be wearing a collar and tag.
